The last winter days mark the start of Carnival, that will fill Madrid with colour, music and laughter, this time heading to La Prospe in the Chamartín district. The band "El Aviador Dro y sus obreros" especializados will perform at the Madrid Carnival 2019 opening ceremony that will kick off the celebrations on March 1 at 8pm at Berlin Park. The opening ceremony will be followed by various concerts and hours of dancing. From 5:30pm to 7:30pm before the opening ceremony, La Radio del Carnaval will get the Madrid Carnival 2019 party started on Plaza de Prosperidad square with an afternoon of music and costumes.
The following day, March 2, there will be another session of La Radio del Carnaval at the Plaza de la Prosperidad from 11am to 2pm, and the eagerly-awaited Madrid Carnival parade, that starts and finishes at Berlin Park and will take the following route through the neighbourhoods Parque Berlín, Pradillo, Príncipe de Vergara, Cartagena, López de Hoyos, Parada en Plaza de Prosperidad, Nieremberg, Parque de Berlín, from 11am to 1pm. After the Madrid Carnival parade (1pm), you can enjoy PLAY’N’KIDS, a concert for the whole family where they will perform the greatest pop-rock hits from the 70s until today: Alaska, Michael Jackson, ACDC, The Beatles and Radio Futura. In the evening, there will be a Masquerade ball with Fundación Orquesta Sinfónica de Chamartín orchestra at 5:30pm at "The Bellas Artes" and a concert by the Orquesta Mondragón, Javier Gurruchaga’s legendary ensemble at 9pm.
On March 3, at 11am and 12 am, Berlin Park will host two of Madrid Carnival´s most traditional events: the tossing of the rag doll (manteo) and a performance by Carnival street musicians and artists (murgas and chirigotas). On Tuesday March 5, at 7pm, the Nicolás Salmerón cultural centre will host the 2nd Show of Madrid’s Comparsas, featuring musicians and dancers. Madrid Carnival celebrations draw to a close with the Burial of the Sardine, when costumes are put away, the fanfares fall silent and the humble fish is buried with honors to indicate that the time has come to quit partying and get ready for Lent. The burial procession starts at Plaza de San Antonio de la Florida, goes along the bridge across the river Manzanares. Finally, the sardine is buried in the Pajaritos Fountain at Plaza de las Moreras in Casa de Campo Park. An impressive bonfire closes the Madrid Carnival ceremony, as though driving away all evils and negative thoughts, with the ashes representing the happiness, joy and harmony!
