It is almost a topic in Barcelona and local people and visitors have thought all their lives that they would never see Sagrada Familia finished, but the end of the project already has a date. It will be 144 years after the plans began to take shape in the central district of L'Eixample and 100 years after the death of Antoni Gaudí. A magnificent work, though without any plans drawn, because all the paper plans made by Gaudí were burned after the irruption of anti-clerical groups during the Civil War. It has been constructed from the indications left by the architect to his assistance, as well as some drawings, models and photographs. The workers of Sagrada Familia have 9 years ahead to finish the monumental work, which in the next 3 years will undergo a huge transformation, as it is planned to lift the 6 central towers of the basilica, which will be so high that they will change the skyline of Barcelona.
The chief architect of Sagrada Familia, Jordi Faulí, affirmed that 70% of the works are already done. The biggest tower, the one of Jesus Christ, will have 172.5 meters and will become the highest building in Barcelona. To the date, Sagrada Familia has 4 towers and in 2020 it would have 18 towers: 12 for the apostles, 4 for the evangelists and the 2 towers of Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene. The dimensions are enormous: the towers of the Nativity Facade will be 100 meters high, the Passion Facade will be 110 meters high and the Glory Facade will be about 120 meters. Several of the originally planned towers are currently missing, but the progress is being achieved quickly, especially with the Torre de María (Mary´s Tower), which will reach 140 meters in height. Everything is built according to the "will of Antoni Gaudí to go up, towards the sky", according to the architect Faulí, who commented that the towers will be crowned with a cross on top for Jesus Christ, and with a star for Mary.
