With the arrival of spring, the Pi neighbourhood of the Gothic Quarter in Barcelona holds its local festival in honour of Sant Josep Oriol. The Festival will last from March 16 to 24, you can see how popular culture plays a major part! The origins of this festival date back to Sant Joseph Oriol, who was born and lived in the old city of Barcelona in the second half of the 17th century and cared of poor and sick. The festival take place on Plaça del Pi and the Plaça Sant Josep Oriol.
On Saturday 16 March, the bells of the Pi church start the opening Sant Joseph Oriol speech with the actor Manel Barceló and the celebrations will get under way. In the afternoon you will see human towers (castellers), while in the evening there’s a performance of the Retaule de Sant Josep Oriol. On Sunday 17, beast traditional gigant figures from all over the Catalan-speaking lands will be accompanying the Lleó and the Mulassa, the city’s festive lion and mule figures. On Thursday 21 there’s a talk at the Casa dels Entremesos, and on Friday 22, a children’s procession. On Saturday 23, the day of Sant Josep Oriol, you will see the traditional Passejada dels Oriols, a parade exclusively for Ciutat Vella’s male giant figures. Finally, on Sunday 24, the festival rounds off with an early morning wake-up call by graller players and drummers in the streets, and the festival parade.
