Granada is a city in southern Spain's Andalusia region, in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. It's known for grand examples of medieval architecture dating to the Moorish occupation, especially the Alhambra. This sprawling hilltop fortress complex encompasses royal palaces, serene patios, and reflecting pools from the Nasrid dynasty, as well as the fountains and orchards of the Generalife gardens.

The Albaicin is a medieval Moorish quarter with narrow streets and views of the Alhambra from the Gothic San Nicolás church. The 16th-century Granada Cathedral has a renaissance interior, and the tombs of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, the monarchs who united Spain in the 15th-century, are in the adjoining Royal Chapel. The hillside neighborhood of Sacromonte stages flamenco shows in whitewashed cave houses. Modern city life is characterized by the university, colorful street art murals, and the tradition of providing free tapas with drinks.
